The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego provides middle school and high school students throughout the San Diego region with unique opportunities to explore contemporary art through lively conversations and hands-on experience. Look/Explore Tours
A Look/Explore Tour is an hour-long, student-centered dialogue in which students gain a greater understanding of the works on view through visual inquiry and in-gallery activities. Gallery Educators facilitate lively conversations on a select number of gallery works, site-specific installations, or the architecture of the Museum, to allow students to deeply engage with the works discussed. Look/Explore Tours are available daily Thursday through Tuesday and are free of cost to all San Diego Unified and San Diego County public and charter schools.
ArtLab Workshops build on the Look/Explore Tour with an additional hour of hands-on art making experience in which students further explore process and materials. ArtLab Workshops offer participants a unique opportunity to work with Gallery Educators on a project inspired by works on view. ArtLab Workshops are available Mondays and Fridays and are free of cost to all San Diego Unified and San Diego County public and charter schools.
At the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, we believe that art can play an integral part in every young person’s education – helping make them better students in other disciplines, as well as more innovative and creative in their problem-solving. It can also give them a sound cultural background upon which they can progress in their school careers. We believe that, if we can introduce young people to the vision of contemporary art and artists, we will help transform students into life-long museum-goers. Moreover, we can foster and develop new and better partnerships with educators and schools, serve as a model for the entire contemporary art field, and perform a function that is very much needed in our community.
