Lunettes from the Sala Capitolo of the Academia

Lunettes from the Sala Capitolo of the Academia

Save Venice Inc.

Save Venice is seeking funding for the restoration of 35 individual lunettes. The cost of restoration for each lunette is $5,000 and up. Restoration cannot begin until a sponsor is found.  The Scuola Grande della Carità was a large charitable guild whose seat is now the site of the Gallerie dell’Accademia.  Much of the original complex of the Scuola della Carità (a culmination of structures and rooms built from the 14th to 17th centuries) is still visible today, having undergone changes and renovations, particularly in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Sala Capitolo, or Great Chapter Hall, maintains its sumptuous gold and blue ceiling, carved by Marco Cozzi from 1461 to 1484. The cornice of the ceiling was originally decorated with painted lunettes that are now lost, and were replaced in the 17th century. These 17th century lunettes, were also removed due to their poor condition.  Once restored, each of these 35 canvas lunettes will be reinstalled in their respective location in the Sala Capitolo.
