Ranked in the top 10 percent of graduate nursing programs, the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science (USD/SON) is the only nursing school in Southern California dedicated to graduate nursing education. Our graduates include Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Nurse Educators, Nurse Scientists and Nurse Executives. We are renowned for our hands-on, innovative education, healthcare missions local and abroad, education of military nurses and emphasis on healthcare technology.
Our Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRNs) graduates are expanding access and improving healthcare delivery. They provide primary care in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and the home. APRNs are a critical solution to the serious primary care physician shortage.
The U.S. also has a serious nursing shortage, caused primarily by lack of faculty. Our graduates also serve as nursing Faculty and Deans. In the San Diego Region alone, we provide up to 43% of the faculty for other nursing schools. We drive the supply of nursing in Southern California.
Our Nurse Scientists focus on wellness, prevention of disease and improved nursing care for patients. Recently, Hahn received the largest research grant in USD history - a $3.1 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to study and treat depression in new mothers. Our research includes sleep disorders; child obesity; dementia; palliative and hospice care, telemedicine; integrative health; and pain management.
Technology plays a key role in our healthcare education. Our unique simulation lab uses over 100 actors, besides computer-driven robotic mannequins to teach nursing skills, providing exposure to a full spectrum of clinical scenarios. We offer the only graduate program in Healthcare Informatics. Healthcare Informatics digitally creates, manages and transmits patient information to providers to improve the efficiency and accuracy of treatment. Nurses educated in informatics provide the interface between IT scientists, providers and patients.
We treat the underserved in San Diego, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, India, and Uganda. We helped the community of Mbarara, Uganda establish their first Children’s Hospital.
Hahn is a preferred educator for military nurses, who are 20% of our student body. The Jonas Foundation of New York chose USD to launch its nursing scholarship program for returning vets. We have developed the only Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing Program focused on the military, including the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
We recently launched a $4 million campaign to support the school. Please help by contributing a gift of any amount to the Dean’s Fund, which provides resources for scholarships, faculty, innovative research, new equipment, and community health activities.
