The Friends of Balboa Park was formed in 1998 to host a grand celebration in the Park for New Year 2000. The Organization, originally named the Millennium Society, quickly morphed to an advocacy/fundraising group with human and financial resources supporting the heart and lungs of San Diego, Balboa Park. The Friends is a volunteer organization; we have two part-time paid staff. The Friends has 11 years of unqualified audited tax returns, a Board of Directors of roughly 20, an Advisory Council of roughly 10 and many volunteers. The mission of Friends is to preserve Balboa Park's legacy for future generations through parkwide projects. The focus of the Friends is THE ENTIRE PARK and all of its 115+ established tenants, as well as the public at large. The Friends accomplishes its mission in four manners: Projects such as: the recenly dedicated multimedia Information Kiosks strategically placed at five locations; equipment and seating enhancements to the 6th Avenue Playground; funding and installation of a full weather station and more than twenty computer- driven master irrigation systems; installation of retractable screen shades in the four Nursery Hot Houses; restoration of two 15-foot-diameter historical fountains, etc. Activities such as public tours; forums; hosting special events, etc. Volunteer Outreach: leading volunteers working in the Park; Arbor Day Plantings; Butterfly Releases, etc., and Advocacy: by connecting the many park stakeholders to one another; by providing publications and information; connecting to public education. 14,000,000 visitors are hosted by Balboa Park annually, the Friends are proud to be a part of what makes the Park so special.
