In addition to the historic preservation projects sponsored by the Friends of Balboa Park, we also work to help connect people to Balboa Park, by sponsoring a number of events, activities and programs, which include the following:
Goal: Staff the Information booth, and assist festival-goers during the popular two-day festival - $500 funds supplies, outreach, and volunteer recruitment.
Park and Recreation Employee Picnic:
We host this together with the retired senior volunteer patrol, and with donations from park institutions.
Goal: provide recognition and opportunity to thank our Park & Recreation maintenance workers - $1,000 for purchase of employee gifts for October picnic.
Millennium Awards Luncheon:
Goal: to celbrate and honor the outstanding contributions of dedicated volunteers, philanthropists, and organizations in Balboa Park. The annual luncheon occurs in late October. The invited guests and Friends members pay for their tickets and the proceeds help fund the event. Underwriting opportunities are available for sponsors beginning at $1,000 - $10,000 and help raise funds for our core programs.
Zoro Garden Butterfly Release:
Hosted by San Diego Floral Association
Goal: Contribute to Butterfly Release as a part of park-wide Family Science Day - $1,000 to purchase butterflies, plants and garden brochures.
Park Resource Directory:
Last printed in 2008, we are seeking $7,500 for a 5th edition printing with improved park map, and a complete listing of every institution doing business in the park today.
Installed at the end of 2007, the energy-efficient bulbs have saved the park thousands of dollars. $10,000 is needed to replace broken bulbs, and finish stringing the lights around the Cascades Plaza and Village Place and the east end of El Prado. LED bulbs cost $7-8 each.
