Border/Fronteras Reporting Fund

Border/Fronteras Reporting Fund

KPBS Television and Radio

The immigration debate can result in a polarized citizenry and a plethora of policy options. To comprehend the complexity of immigration, one must examine the interwoven lives of residents – on both sides of the border. Support for the KPBS Border/Fronteras desk can provide a clear portrait of the life, culture, challenges, and promises of the border region. Stories will cover immigration, healthcare, the economy, education, infrastructure, the environment, arts and culture from a cross-border perspective. The border is a defining feature of the San Diego/Tijuana region, yet, it remains severely under-covered by major commercial news outlets. Covering the border requires commitment to overcome challenges: working in two countries, in two cultures, in two languages. KPBS chooses to make that commitment.

It will cost $90,000 a year for salary and benefits, overhead costs, research and equipment to support one staff member per fund  We require funding for a minimum if three years to assure continuity of the position and sufficient resources.
