Our popular AniMeals program offers free pet food for the dogs and cats of elderly or disabled people throughout San Diego County. AniMeals helps keep people and their companion pets together by removing logistical and financial obstacles to ensure that clients will always be able to provide nutritious meals for their beloved pets.
Logistically, AniMeals is a low-cost, efficient program. About 35 AniMeals volunteers pick up the donated pet food from collection points in PETCO stores around the county and deliver it to the Center. At the Center, a group of 10 volunteers package and label the food according to the specific needs of each individual client. Another group of volunteers then delivers the packaged food to our social service agency that actually delivers the food to the clients. Presently, the Center is providing AniMeals’ service to almost 300 companion animals throughout San Diego County.
The desired result of this program is that each one of the clients we serve with AniMeals will be able to keep their companion animal because of the pet food and supplies that we provide them. As a result, these individuals will enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of pet ownership, including lower blood pressure, less medications, and increased relaxation. It is our hope that they will suffer from depression less frequently and maintain an enthusiasm for life, as a result of their special bond with a pet.
