Created in 1990, this is the pilot program at Mama’s Kitchen, and home-delivers meals to people living with AIDS who are physically and/or mentally unable to prepare their own meals. In 2012, 278,778 nourishing meals were delivered to 404 individuals.
To reach our target population, we collaborate with case managers and healthcare providers that certify a program applicant’s eligibility, refer them to us, and recertify their eligibility every six months.
This is the sole program in San Diego County that delivers 100% nutrition (breakfast, lunch and dinner for 365 days a year) to individuals affected by AIDS, on a county-wide basis, free of charge. We measure the effectiveness of our meal deliveries with an annual survey of all active meal recipients. The following quote from a recipient of home-delivered meals illustrates the need to be met by this program:
“I now weigh 135 pounds and get to eat all month. This service is not only good for your spirit, but it is life-altering and life-saving. I would not be here without the protein and other elements in the food that is delivered to me.”
